The Power of Play Dough

Here at PCK, we believe in the importance of children playing and exploring with play dough. This rich experience allows children to develop and practise the many skills needed for their future learning such as hand muscles for holding a pencil and writing, social skills, descriptive language, creative and critical thinking, problem solving, imagination, counting, comparing, ordering, storytelling just to name a few.

At PCK, we use simple props (loose parts) which can easily be found to enhance or add to the play dough experience (eg. candles, bottle tops, combs, cooking utensils, bottoms, feathers, sticks, stones, leaves, gems, patty pans, toothpicks, etc.) rather than cookie cutters to assist with children using their imaginative and creativity.

For more info about the benefits of play dough click on the link below.

After reading the three little pigs, the educators set up a provocation including items children could use to create the little pig’s houses.

Learning through the senses.
Here at PCK the children are invited to take part in experiences which involve all of their senses. In the morning, the children had the opportunity to feel different textures and describe what they felt. In the afternoon, there were invited to use their sense of taste and try foods which were sour, sweet, salty. Can you guess which was the crowd favourite? 🍫

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR WA KIDS (and chocolate lovers) Yesterday, I received a very important letter from Taylah, who is nine years old and lives in Thornlie. Taylah asks: "Will the Easter Bunny be able to come to Western Australia this year? I heard that no one can come into Australia because of COVID-19." Well Taylah, I have some very important news to share with you and all WA kids today.

Some children at Kindy, making food for a very important “birthday party”. Look at the array of cakes, soup, milkshakes, cupcakes the children carefully planned and prepared. This experience saw the children communicating their ideas with peers, negotiating and sharing the oven space, deciding the time it took to cook the different cakes and cupcakes, planning what food needed to be organised, discussions about specific ingredients and their properties, working together and compromising on ideas and most of all having a lot of fun!
